Wine Terms

Blanc de Blanc:  term meaning "white of whites", which is a sparkling white wine made up    entirely of white grapes, such as Chardonnay.

Blanc de Noir:  term meaning "white of blacks", which is a sparkling white wine made from red or black grapes, such as Pinot Noir.  The juice is extracted from the grapes and is fermented without the skin.  May have a slight pinkish color.

Brut:  a dry Champagne or sparkling wine.  This is essentially the driest wine made by a producer.

Extra Dry:  opposite of what the term may say, it is a semi-sweet Champagne or sparkling wine.

Demi-Sec:  meaning "half-dry", this sparkling wine is usually lightly sweet to medium sweet.

Decanting: this is the process of separating the sediment that a wine can produce from the wine.  Standing the bottle upright for about 24 hours is recommended.

Late Harvest:  this indicates a wine where the grapes were picked later than usual in the season.  these wines have a higher sugar level.

Tannin:  this is a natural preservative found mostly in red wines that is produced from the grape skins, seeds, and stems.  This helps wine age and mature in the bottle for years.

Acid:  found in all grapes.  This helps preserve wine and prolong its aftertast.

 

Wine Bottle Sizes

1.  Half-Bottle:  375 milliliters

2.  Fifth:  750 milliliters

3.  Magnum:  1.5 liters

4.  Double Magnum:  3.0 liters for red wine

5.  Jeroboam:  3.0 liters for sparkling wine or 4.5 liters for red wine.

6.  Rehoboam:  4.5 liters for Champagne

7.  Imperial:  6.0 liters for red wine

8.  Methuselah: 6.0 liters for Champagne

9.  Salmanzar:  9.0 liters of wine

10.  Nebuchadnezzar:  15.0 liters of wine
